How to Count the Characters in Your Strings

Counting characters is quite easy. In Excel 2016, you can get the exact number of characters in a string using a simple function. This function, called “LEN”, takes a cell as its argument. Just enter the address of the cell that holds your string. For example, if A1 holds “This is a sample”, the formula will give you 16:

=LEN(A1)

Important Note:

This function includes space characters and punctuation marks in the counting process.

Figure 100: There’s a total of 16 characters in the A1 cell: 13 letters and 3 spaces
